New design for Antarctic Research station

Faber Maunsell and Hugh Broughton, both architects, won the competition for designing the new British Antarctic Survey (BAS) Halley Research Station. The modulate station will be elevated on ski-based jackable legs to avoid burial by snow and to be easily towed across the ice. The central module is packed with stimulating areas for recreation and relaxation. It also features state of the art fuel, waste and material handling, and renewable energy sources for implementing pro-environmental strategies. This station is said to be compared to a four star hotel in some areas.
