MIT-plans-'Stackable'-Cars-for-the-Future.JPG

"Imagine a shopping cart - a vehicle that can stack - you can take the first vehicle out of a stack and off you go," says Mr Chin an architect and engineer at MIT's media lab and a member of Prof Mitchell's research group. "These stacks would be placed throughout the city. A good place would be outside a subway station or a bus line or an airport, places where there's a convergence of transportation lines and people." MIT has been working on these 'Stackable' Cars for the for the past 4 years. They will generate zero pollution and will be customizable. A final design will be presented to General Motors in a few months, which will build a prototype. Something to look for in the near future.

December 15, 2005 | Comments (0) | | News

Bugatti-Veyron.JPG

The $1 million dollar Bugatti Veyron, now the world's fastest factory-produced automobile, is about to arrive on American shores. It features a massive, rear-mounted 16-cylinder engine with 1,001 horsepower, needs just 2.5 seconds to accelerate from zero to 62 miles per hour, and burns rubber so quickly that its makers had to hire France's Michelin SCA to develop a special compound for its tires. Its top speed: 252.9 mph. 6 U.S. Bentley dealerships will sell this fortune of a car. Who will buy this car....Not I.

The comfortable bigha bike is A rolling work of art

December 14, 2005 | Comments (0) | | Vehicles

The-comfortable-bigha-bike.JPG

Bicycling is a very beneficial form of transport. Whether commuting or sightseeing, you will see, hear and feel more. The truth is
that most bicycles are uncomfortable and designed for racing even while most bicyclists don’t race. Racing designs trade comfort and durability to try and get every bit of speed out of the bike. Do you need that? You're not competing in the Tour De France! The Bigha bike is designed for comfort and provides a full seat with seat back compared to the a regular bike where you sit on a tiny seat and have to lean forward in that annoying crouch position. In the Bigha bike you sit upright so your hands and wrists carry no body weight. Some bike features are a LCD display with back light for nighttime viewing which gives you an update on everything from temperature to speed, a 100 decibel alarm, a button-operated horn and many more. Check out all the features here. Comfort doesn't come cheap as these bikes cost from $3,900-$4,600. But hey! This ain't nothin like grandma's bike. (even though she's like to ride it)

Masterflex, a german company that first developed the prototype of a fuel cell powered bicycle in 2004, received there first order for the bikes from Herten, a city in North Rhine Whestpalia. These Masterflex fuel cell bikes are based on the Swizzbee 50c electric bike, which uses a Masterflex 250-watt PEM fuel cell fueled by 45 grams of hydrogen stored in a Hera metal hydride system to power a 250-watt electric motor. This kind of fuel cell provides enough energy to move the bike up to 120 kilometers, about 75 miles.

SportVue-MC2-motorcycle-display.JPG

When you think about the SportVue MC2 motorcycle display, $389, think fighter airplanes... Data is projected into their helmet visor, much like telemetric data for motorcyclists (like speed, gears and even avoid radar traps) is transmitted into the glass display right in front of them. This will definitely make a riding a motorcycle much safer!

i-Swing the Concept Wearable Car

October 30, 2005 | Comments (0) | | Vehicles

i-Swing-the-Concept-Wearable-Car.JPG

Toyota car designer Hideo Miwa envisions a future of wearable vehicles, like the i-Swing Concept Wearable Car he recently put out. Imagine living in the future and being too lazy to walk, ride a bike etc. to your destination, unless it's far off course, but this kind of a future will be a fat one for sure. The i-Swing car can travel on two or three wheels and has a body made of polyurethane covered in fabric so as to soften the impact if it bumps into people or objects. Toyoya's idea of a "wearable vehicle", due to the soft material used in the i-swing’s body, is not expected to be sold commercially any time soon but is still cool.

volvo-gravity-powered-car-concept.JPG

Volvo has tested a concept that doesn't use gasoline or even have an engine, but it does need to be on an inclined plane though. The Volvo concept uses Sir Isaac Newton's fave force to power it, propelling it up to speeds of 54mph. Though fastest in the Extreme Gravity Competition held in California, which saw other automotive heavyweights such as Audi and Bentley competing, you won't see this concept on the road ever.

Yamaha FC-me (Special exhibition model: prototype)

October 05, 2005 | Comments (0) | | Vehicles

Yamaha-FC-me.JPG

The "Yamaha Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) System" uses a liquid methanol-water solution for fuel, which eliminates the need for a converter and a pressurized (fuel) tank and thus makes it possible to create a lightweight system for a small vehicle requiring power in the 1 kW or less range without compromising on the bike's power. Optimizing the control parameters for the fuel cell system has allowed for an energy conversion rate for the FC-me that is 1.5 times that of the FC06 PROTO, and re-evaluation of the body components has lowered the bike to only 69 kg. The bike will be available for lease as of September 16 of this year.

Solar-powered Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

September 10, 2005 | Comments (0) | | Vehicles

Solar-powered-Autonomous-Underwater-Vehicle.jpg

This new solar-powered underwater vehicle was designed to provide better observation and monitoring of complex aquatic systems in testing dissolved oxygen levels for example, as well as applications to environmental management and security and defense programs. How you ask? Using integrated sensor microsystems, pervasive computing, wireless communications, and sensor mobility with robotics, these SUAVs will network with one another in real time to assess a water body as a whole. Even the U.S. Navy has paid attention and will evaluate their use for coastal surveillance applications. The SAUV weighs 370 pounds, moves slowly at 2 miles per hour, but can dive to depths up to 500 meters. New pro-earth technology! Great!

Check out this journal of Field tests of two SAUVs ,SAUV II and REMUS, in Lake George, NY at the Autonomous Undersea Systems Institute.

New BMW 1 series Sports Hatch

bmw-116i-118-sports-hatch.jpg

Here's my first glimpse at the new BMW 1 series in Cannes, France where the lowest model 116i starts at 28,800 Euros (34,912.90 USD). The BMW 1 series Sports Hatch comes in models 116, 118, or 120, easily fits four, has enough cargo space for two, and is perfect for the streets of Europe. These aren't available in the US... but are very popular in Europe. It would be an adventure to purchase this car overseas and deliver it back to the states... off course, after testing the Autobahn. (I think there’s a 500 mile prerequisite matter that needs to be settled with some spontaneous driving.)

The Go bike

the-go-bike.jpg

Is this just another fad? It just looks to good to be another scooter. This is the new Go Bike from Japan and it dreams of being the new scooter of the biking world. And if it isn't that big of a success? Well at least it looks really funky. Go bike fold ups, is strong, durable and can take a hard ride. This completely custom bike comes in colors like grey, orange, blue and green and features parts like the Gobell and a sharp 3 tone seat. Urbanites will eat these up. That is if they can understand Japanese.

Honda Cub

July 26, 2005 | Comments (0) | | Vehicles

Honda-cub-concept.jpg

Sam Jilbert designed this hydrogen fuel cell concept based on a Honda Cub Design. He explains: "I've based this concept around the Honda Cub, which has been around for decades and is still very popular on the continent with locals and tourists alike. The Cub is very practical but this concept takes it to a new level, with a provocative image and being environmentally responsible, the new Cub should appeal to young city professionals and the young trendy market in general." Who knows if we'll ever see motorcycles shaped like that on the streets? But it's still a really cool concept. Hopefully we will see this sleek, pro-enviromental concept in real life someday, or something close to it.

bombadier embrio concept

July 26, 2005 | Comments (0) | | Vehicles

bombadier-embrio.jpg

Remember the Segway Human transporter? Bombadier, the same company that produces wave runners and airplanes created a similar concept that uses gyroscope technology to balance riders while they ride but includes a more sporty style absent in the Segway. Though this prototype may or may not make production it's designed to be a guess at transportation in the year 2025. The Embrio is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell which creates power by mixing hydrogen and oxygen, creating only water as a by product. Other advanced technologies in the concept's design include infrared night vision and an active suspension. A small wheel on the front keeps the Embrio stable when you start or stop but retracts after you hit 12 miles per hour.
